SOCIAL MEDIA

For this post, I wrote a caption that complemented the action shot of one of my teammates setting in a volleyball game. I focused on capturing the excitement and urgency of the game, while also providing context about the score and the significance of the moment. The challenge was making sure the caption was engaging and concise, while still conveying key details for those who might not have seen the game. This post is important to me because it allowed me to balance storytelling with brevity, and it made me separate myself as someone who was playing in the game from the journalist who is documenting it, so it pushed me to be really aware of bias and move away from my own emotions and more towards what is actually being photographed.

In this post, I wanted to convey the emotions of the coach, which is a person who is not really focused on, since most sports reporting is about the players and the excitement in the game. I wanted the caption to resonate with the audience by highlighting the behind-the-scenes moments that show the mental preparation and focus of the team from the person who is intentionally teaching their skills and creating the team environment. The challenging part for me was writing a caption that, again, still was exciting and interesting and was about the athletes and the sport, but also conveyed another perspective. It was harder for me to think from the outside and match the excitement and stress of the photo with an interesting caption, because the person I was interviewing wasn't directly involved in all the action.

I wrote the caption for this photo, and my goal was to make sure it provided context, highlighted the speaker's key message, and connected to the broader story of the guest speaker. Writing an engaging and informative caption required understanding the speaker’s impact and balancing being concise and relatable to a high school audience with detail. For me, the biggest challenge was summarizing the the presentation in a way that resonated with our audience because the speaker was talking about an important, serious topic, yet it can be hard to interest a younger audience in something that is too serious.

When I was making this, I wanted it to be a vibrant and fun graphic to promote our distribution day. I focused on exciting and lively colors to attract attention in a young audience and create excitement. Designing this piece involved brainstorming themes, experimenting with layouts, and balancing bold visuals with clear messaging, which was new for me, since I had previously done more with photos and wasn't as experienced with graphics. The main challenge was ensuring the design aligned with the publication’s branding while standing out. I’m proud of this work because it shows my ability to create engaging promotional materials that drive schoolwide participation.
